The Academy Awards' Brand-New Rule Is 96 Years Overdue

Earlier this week, the Academy announced a new set of rules approved for the 98th Oscars, which will take place on March 15, 2026. They introduced the guidelines for the soon-to-debut Best Casting award, changed certain submission deadlines, expanded eligibility for international filmmakers, and issued formal guidance on the use of AI. The most notable announcement, though, was officially putting in place a rule that requires Academy members to view all nominated films in a category before being eligible to vote on that award. While it's slightly depressing that this is something the Academy actually needed to put into writing — this new, potentially long-overdue rule should greatly benefit the Oscars, award seasons, and film fans going forward, as long as there is a way to properly enforce it.
