MOST people’s local McDonald’s are on their local high street or an out-of-town industrial estate.
But for some lucky people in New Zealand, theirs is inside a decommissioned DC-3 plane.

On the aircraft-turned fast-food restaurant inTaupo, New Zealand,, you’ll find the original plane stairs that lead into the restaurant, which has room for a maximum of 20 diners across 10 tables.
There’s also the cockpit, which has been preserved behind a glass wall.
The outside of the plane has been repainted, and the previous airline name has been replaced with “McDonald’s”.
The tail end of the plane features the classic McDonald’s golden arches and outside, there’s a playground for kids.
The owner of the McDonald’s, Eileen Byrne told Business Insider: “Our locals are very proud of it. It has become a landmark here in New Zealand.”
Eileen went on to add that the plane was originally built in California in 1943.
But it was then transferred to Australia where it was used as a passenger plane until the 1960s.
The plane then moved to New Zealand and went out of service in 1984 after racking up over 50,000 flying hours.
While you can’t actually order food in the plane, you can from the McDonald’s restaurant next door and take your Big Mac or nuggets onboard to enjoy.
We previously spoke to Gary He, a food journalist from Brooklyn, New York who has documented his journey to McDonald’s restaurants in 50 countries.

And when he was asked about the strangest McDonald’s he’d been into, it was this one.
Gary said: “The quirkiest award has to go to the McDonald’s airplane in Taupo, New Zealand.
“It was an advertising fixture for the car dealership that used to occupy the location, and after the franchisees took over the lot, they just painted the Golden Arches onto it and made it overflow seating.”
Other quirky McDonald’s of note include those in Lindvallen, Sweden that are only open during winter.
The restaurant is at the base of the slopes at one of Sweden’s most popular ski resorts and is built to resemble a giant lodge.
The defining characteristic of this McDonald’s is the ski-thru window, the only one of its kind in the world.
And in Roswell New Mexico, you’ll find a UFO McDonald’s.
It was built in this way to pay homage to the town’s heritage as the site of the 1947 Roswell Incident.
Shaped like a metallic space ship surrounded by alien statues, this location features a space-themed play place with McDonaldland characters dressed as astronauts, otherworldly light projections, and even a merch store.
