When M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender flopped critically and commercially in 2010, the consensus was that the filmmaker should perhaps not write his own movies going forward. The Last Airbender was widely ridiculed for its stilted dialogue, a criticism that Shyamalan would attract earlier as well, and for its lack of fidelity to the source material. For his next project, Shyamalan seemed to take popular advice into account; he made the science-fiction action film After Earth, written by Gary Whitta. But the movie was an even bigger flop than The Last Airbender, effectively sending Shyamalan to "director jail" until he bailed himself out with (literally his own money) some years later. The movie will soon be available to stream on Prime Video.
