In 1968, the Motion Picture Association of America introduced the R rating, replacing the old censorial Hays Code with a system to more effectively let parents know about a film's mature contents. Over the course of the past 50 years in particular, the R rating has given us several of the greatest science fiction movies ever made. They may not be for kids, but they sure are essential viewing for any sci-fi fan old enough to experience them.
