Just when the hockey community is all set to witness some ice-heating moments, the IIHF Men’s World Championships comes with a major setback, especially for the team USA. Yep, when the spotlight isn’t just on the puck, then it is on who isn’t there to chase it! Recall the surging national pride during the 4 Nations Face-Off? It’s not dissimilar but this time the excitement is slowly morphing into worry. Why? Because the NHL’s Stanley Cup Playoffs are occurring simultaneously and are hogging Team USA’s top stars.

The absence of some big names on the roster can truly be felt as Team USA struggled in their 3-0 group stage defeat to Switzerland. While the Swiss are skating in with full rosters, Team USA are feeling the absence of the likes of Auston Matthews and Matthew Tkachuk, who’re busy duking it out in the playoffs.

After cruising to 0-5 and 6-0 wins against Denmark and Hungary respectively, Team USA were handed a reality check when they found themselves 2-0 down to Switzerland and unable to respond only after the first period. Even the NHL network shared the following update: “Team USA with some work to do after one.”

While they entered the series with two dominating wins against Denmark and Hungary, things seem to have taken a different turn now. After all, opening with a clean 5–0 sweep against Denmark, where players like Matty Beniers, Tage Thompson, and Joey Daccord, the same efforts that sealed back-to-back shutouts were absent in game 3.

Well, are the Swiss giving the Americans some kind of reality check? Because for a team that crushed Denmark and Hungary like a warm-up drill, this sudden stumble might be indicative of deeper problems. Hence, amidst all the noise, the absence of their NHL stars could clearly be felt. To say that for fans and spectators, it’s becoming impossible to see star players like Matthew Tkachuk and Matthews missing the world championships when Team USA needs them the most.

Well, where’s Captain America to save Team USA?

While notable names like Sidney Crosby are all suiting up for their national team, Canada, it’s Team USA’s roster that faces key absences that are pretty hard to ignore. Tkachuk, the gritty forward well known for his fire and fight, is exactly what the team needs right now. The tournament, in full swing from May 9 to 25 in Stockholm, has seen the Americans are skating without some of their biggest weapons, now tangled up in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Matthew Tkachuk’s Panthers were busy clawing their way back up from a 2-nothing series deficit to level it all at 2-2 after a game 4 win. With both teams back on level footing and with an all-important game 5 looming, Tkachuk and Matthews are unlikely to have anything but the playoffs on their minds.

And while the U.S. is missing its difference makers, the story is different on the Canadian side. Because they don’t just have Captain Canada leading the team, players like Nathan MacKinnon, Macklin Celebrini, and Brayden Schenn are raring to go.

But for now it’s safe to say that the stars and stripes are just flying a little low on the ice but not touching the ground because they have already proved who they are by winning big in the initial games, right?
