Coco Gauff’s 2025 season has been a mixed bag so far, with flashes of brilliance shadowed by inconsistency. After a strong showing in the United Cup, she suffered a quarterfinal exit in the Australian Open. Her momentum dipped further during the Middle East swing, and it was followed by back-to-back R16 exits at the Sunshine Double. A disappointing straight-sets loss to Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in the Stuttgart QFs only added to the frustration. But in Madrid, something shifted! Gauff showed the grit and fire of a GS champion against the Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska in R64, grinding out a comeback win on clay. And then came a magical moment, as fans waited late into the night just to get a glimpse of Coco. It was pure Madrid energy, and just the kind of emotional fuel Coco may need to spark a thrilling run. So, what might the fans have in store for her?

Remember last year’s Madrid Open opener where Coco Gauff secured a flawless 6-0, 6-0 debut win over Arantxa Rus. The former US pen champion experienced a fan moment that caught her by surprise. She took to IG, urging her followers to watch her next stories, teasing, “I normally don’t record videos like this, but I had the craziest fan, she is the sweetest soul, but I am about to post, just watch the next two posts.” So, what was there in the following stories?

Well, a fan asked Coco to autograph her arm, vowing to turn it into a tattoo. Hours later, Gauff reshared the fan’s reel where she had gotten the signature inked. Coco was genuinely moved, as she captioned the story, “and she actually got it tatted. MADRID ENERGY IS DIFFERENT! Sob fr omg.” Now, fast-forward to this year, after a tough opening win against Yastremska, a similar fan moment took center stage, prompting Coco to capture the moment and share it on IG again. Some energies, clearly, never fade!

A couple of hours after wrapping up her opening match at the Madrid Open, the former US Open winner lit up IG with a series of heartfelt fan moments. One story, in particular, stood out, featuring a fan named Katherine Canlas, who proudly showed off a fresh tattoo of Coco’s signature and silhouette on her right arm. “She tatted me and my signature omg,” a visibly thrilled Coco wrote in the caption.

The touching moment didn’t end there, though. Katherine later posted her own story, showing Coco taking a picture of the tattoo. Alongside it, she wrote, “@cocogauff Got shoes signed and a hug, I can die happy now.” Coco, clearly moved, reshared the post to her own story, embracing the beautiful interaction with joy and gratitude.

Earlier, the 21-year-old had already shared another fan moment that showed how much she’s admired around the world. Although it was well after 11 pm in the Spanish capital, a dedicated group of supporters remained outside the stadium. Coco, touched by the gesture, captioned the video, “11:16 aww they waited an hour and a half after my match for me to come out… I love Madrid.”

The connection Coco shares with her fans in Madrid is something special. But while she treasures these heartwarming moments, her focus now shifts to business on the court. With the love and energy of Madrid fans behind her, she’s heading into the second round of the tournament, looking to carry both her fighting spirit and the emotional boost into the next challenge.

“Not going to win every tournament,” Coco Gauff opens up after her win against Dayana Yastremska in the Madrid opener

Coco Gauff has always embraced the challenges of clay, but her opening match at this year’s Madrid Open tested her resolve like never before. Facing Dayana Yastremska, Gauff endured a nightmare start, dropping the first set 0-6. Her serve, a persistent concern over the past year, completely unraveled. She landed just 29 percent of her first serves, won a mere 25 percent on her second, and secured only five points on serve in a set where she totaled just 13 points. Despite the chaos, though, Gauff refused to crumble.

She roared back with grit and determination, taking the second set 6-2. The final set was a rollercoaster, riddled with breaks, frustration, and visible tension as the 21-year-old repeatedly looked to her player’s box for encouragement. Yet even without vocal support from her team, Gauff dug deep to close out a hard-earned 0-6, 6-2, 6-3 win. Post-match, Coco delivered a compelling message about the challenges and rewards of professional tennis, highlighting her resolute determination, mirroring that of a GS winner.

“I think it’s just finding the balance and knowing that this is a long season, a long sport. And you’re not going to win every tournament. And I am someone that goes in believing that I can. So it is sometimes a letdown when I don’t. So I just try to take the positives from the losses, which is something I’ve been working on lately. I always thought I was the type of person who needed matches to bring confidence. And then a lot of my results just came out of nowhere with maybe not as many matches doing well,” Coco Gauff said at the post-match press conference.

Coco’s victory sets up a clash with fellow American Ann Li, who edged past 25th seed Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in R64. Can Coco overcome her fellow compatriot to advance to the next stage tomorrow? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
