SWAT’s Shemar Moore Reveals Why Exiles Got Picked After 3 Cancellations

For Shemar Moore, S.W.A.T. Exiles exists because the original series refused to disappear quietly. The actor watched S.W.A.T. survive repeated cancellations attempts to end its run, and he now credits the cast’s persistence and a loyal worldwide audience for keeping Hondo’s story alive.

Shemar Moore explains why Exiles got picked after SWAT’s three cancellations

Shemar Moore discussed the franchise’s unlikely journey in an interview with ScreenRant’s Grant Hermanns for the outlet’s S.W.A.T. Exiles cover story. He recalled that uncertainty followed the CBS drama almost from the beginning. Even after the network ordered 13 episodes in 2017, the cast still needed a “back nine” to secure a full season.

That nervous wait became a familiar part of making S.W.A.T. Moore said nobody knew whether another season would arrive whenever production wrapped. The show eventually reached a major crossroads when CBS canceled it after six seasons, but Moore took the fight to social media. His public comments helped push the network to reverse the decision and bring the series back for Season 7.

The drama repeated itself. CBS canceled S.W.A.T. again, and Moore once again turned to social media. The network then ordered an eighth season, giving the series another chance before its eventual 2025 ending. Looking back, Moore described the experience as a constant push and pull but pointed to the passion surrounding the show as the reason it kept returning.

“We got cancelled, and I ran my mouth on social media,” Moore told ScreenRant, recalling how the second reversal unfolded. He also summed up the franchise’s endurance saying “Nothing lasts forever.” He added, “The passion was there from us, and the passion was there from the fan base.”

That support now carries into S.W.A.T. Exiles, with Moore returning as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson. Sony Pictures Television produces the Starz spinoff, which brings back Jay Harrington and David Lim while adding Lucy Barrett, Freddy Miyares, Zyra Gorecki, Ronen Rubinstein and Adain Bradley.

The first season will run for 10 episodes, and Starz has already greenlit Season 2.
