Twenty years after saying "I do", Suriya and Jyotika have celebrated their marriage by doing it all over again. The couple recently renewed their wedding vows at an intimate ceremony attended by their children, family and close friends. Sharing glimpses from the occasion, Jyotika aptly described the celebration as “THE SEQUEL” and called it a celebration of 20 years of “love and war”.

The occasion has brought renewed attention to one of Tamil cinema's most enduring relationships, one that has the unusual distinction of having its early chapters play out on screen before becoming a real-life love story. From their first meeting in 1999 to the films that brought them closer and the fictional marriage they portrayed just days before their own wedding, Suriya and Jyotika's journey has been remarkably cinematic.

From Poovellam Kettuppar To Kaakha Kaakha

Suriya and Jyotika first worked together in Vasanth's Poovellam Kettuppar in 1999. Jyotika was relatively new to Tamil cinema then. Having grown up in Mumbai, she was still learning the language and has been remembered for the sincerity with which she approached her work.

Suriya has previously recalled being impressed by her dedication, particularly her efforts to learn her lines. However, their first film did not immediately lead to a romance. The relationship began as a friendship and developed gradually through subsequent collaborations.

The actors reunited in Uyirile Kalanthathu before their most significant collaboration arrived with Gautham Vasudev Menon's Kaakha Kaakha in 2003. The cop thriller proved to be a turning point for both their careers, but it also became an important chapter in their personal lives.

Interestingly, Jyotika had recommended Suriya to Gautham Menon after being impressed by his performance in Nandha. While working together on Kaakha Kaakha, their friendship reportedly grew into love.

Jyotika has previously spoken about what made Suriya special to her during those years. She said his respect towards her played a major role in her decision to marry him. She recalled that even while filming romantic scenes, he never went beyond what was required for the performance and remained respectful of her boundaries.

Their professional partnership continued with Perazhagan and Maayavi. But it was their final film together as co-stars that would later take on an almost uncanny significance.

Sillunu Oru Kaadhal Was Almost A Preview Of Real Life

In Sillunu Oru Kaadhal, Suriya and Jyotika played a married couple. The film arrived in theatres in 2006, just three days before the actors got married in real life on September 11.

By then, their relationship had already developed over several years away from the cameras. Their decision to marry was not entirely straightforward, with Suriya's father, veteran actor Sivakumar, having recalled that he was initially opposed to the relationship before eventually accepting their decision. Suriya had reportedly made his intentions clear to his family.

After their wedding, Jyotika took a break from acting while raising their children, Diya and Dev. She returned to the screen with 36 Vayadhinile in 2015, with Suriya supporting her comeback. Their professional association also evolved beyond acting, with the couple working together as producers through 2D Entertainment.

Over the years, both actors have continued to speak about the importance of respect and companionship in marriage. Ahead of their 20th anniversary, Suriya spoke about love at the Vishwanath & Sons audio launch, stressing that love should continue after marriage and that couples should keep respecting each other as their priorities and lives change.

Now, 20 years after their original wedding, the couple have marked the milestone with a second set of vows. It is an appropriately cinematic moment for two actors whose relationship has always been intertwined with the movies. They met on a film set, became friends through years of working together, fell in love while making a film, played husband and wife on screen just days before becoming husband and wife in reality, and have now returned to the wedding aisle for their own sequel.

For Suriya and Jyotika, the story that began with Poovellam Kettuppar has entered another chapter. And this time, there is no director calling cut.
