Supergirl: Grant Morrison Calls Jason Momoa’s Lobo One of the Worst Movie Performances Ever

Grant Morrison has shared their review of Supergirl, the DCU’s recent box office disappointment. The renowned comic book writer was particularly disappointed with Jason Momoa’s performance.

In their September 20 Substack post, Grant Morrison shared their thoughts on Supergirl. The DC Comics writer, who has penned issues of Green Lantern, Animal Man, Doom Patrol, and more, began by praising Milly Alcock’s performance as the titular superhero before pointing out all the aspects of the movie they felt did not work.

“I watched Supergirl, which wasn’t terrible but wasn’t especially great either,” Morrison wrote. “All the best and most moving scenes involved Millie Alcock, and I thought she did a credible job.”

They added, “Jason Momoa, who I was actually looking forward to, was very disappointing as Lobo. It was, in fact, one of the worst performances I’ve ever seen in a film and quite baffling, as I know Momoa’s not usually that bad, and Lobo seems like a character made for him to play. Go figure.”

What else did Grant Morrison criticize about the Supergirl movie?

Grant Morrison also criticized Supergirl’s plot in the second half and outlined alternative creative choices that could have been made.

“Then the whole plot fell apart in Act 2,” the DC Comics writer wrote. “All Supergirl had to do was bring Krypto with her to that yellow sun world, and the sun’s rays would have made the dog invulnerable again, easily able to shake off any toxin.”

Morrison concluded, “They needn’t have bothered chasing after the dull and low level Romanian gangster baddie, Krem of the Yellow Hills, to get the antidote after all!”

Supergirl arrived in US theaters on June 26, as part of the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. It was a major box office disappointment, grossing $126.4 million against a production budget of $170–186 million.

Meanwhile, the DCU fans are looking forward to the upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, set to release on July 9, 2027.
