After Kunal Nayyar‘s Rajesh “Raj” Koothrappali, another huge Big Bang Theory character returns in Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. However, due to the series being an unusual sci-fi spin-off of a sitcom, their return comes with a caveat.

How Stuart Fails to Save the Universe brings back Kaley Cuoco’s Penny

Kaley Cuoco returns as Penny toward the end of Episode 2 of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. But it’s not the Penny that The Big Bang Theory fans have known and loved over the 12 seasons of the mothership series. Instead, keeping with the themes and narrative of the spin-off, she’s an alternate version of the character.

In Episode 2, titled “Spoiler: Bert Is Magic,” Stuart (Kevin Sussman), Kripke (John Ross Bowie), and Bert (Brian Posehn) find themselves in a much calmer version of Pasadena than the one they came from. However, they soon discover that all of it is a façade. Stuart and others have devices planted on the back of their heads that give them jolts of electric shocks whenever they become angry or get into an argument. They spend months in jail. After getting out, they encounter a rebel group led by Penny.

This version of the popular character is starkly different from the one in The Big Bang Theory. Shortly after the introduction, she begins slapping Stuart and the rest. Chuck Lorre, co-creator of both the original and spin-off series, reflected on the differences. “A big part of it was offering them a challenge to do something entirely different,” he said. “As you’ve seen in Episode 2, Kaley’s not playing the server in the Cheesecake Factory. It’s still Penny, and now she’s a badass guerrilla leader. That was part of the design from the very beginning. In a multiverse environment, these characters could recur as themselves, but with an entirely different backstory” (via Variety).
