On the eve of the NFL draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers decided against drafting a QB in the early rounds. Jaxson Dart, Tyler Shough, Jalen Milroe, Dillon Gabriel, Shedeur Sanders and even Kyle McCord went off the board. But the Steelers still didn’t select a QB. It was not until the sixth round that they chose Ohio State’s National Champion Will Howard. His arrival in Steel City came at a time when the whole franchise had been waiting for Aaron Rodgers. Now it’s been close to a month since Howard joined the Steelers, but Rodgers still remains a free agent. So, considering the offseason workouts are fully underway, this time it was Howard who gave an update on the probability of Rodgers being anointed as a Steeler.

Rodgers has never really liked the offseason program anyway. Whether it’s Phase 1 of weight rooms and stretching or Phase 2 of non-contact training, Rodgers likes to skip it all. Just take, for example, last year, the man was coming off a season-ending ACL injury. While you would expect most players to return ASAP to join their team, Rodgers didn’t bother. When the Jets’ mandatory mini-camp kicked off, Rodgers was busy vacationing in Egypt. So, it’s pretty easy to understand his stance on offseason practices.

That brings us back to Howard. He might not be NFL-ready, given how late the Steelers picked him at the draft. But if Rodgers doesn’t end up signing, he might have a bigger role to play than just sitting on the bench. Though Rodgers’ arrival could probably derail his rookie season, Howard doesn’t really care about it. Instead, in an appearance on the Up & Adams show, he spoke about “idolizing” Rodgers. And then proceeded to send a message to him while simultaneously giving an update on this never-ending Rodgers saga.

“I don’t know what’s gonna happen, who knows, that’s all over head. But I’d love to be in a room and learn from him,” Howard said. Given that Howard was just 4 years old when Rodgers was drafted. Of course, he would have grown idolizing the future Hall of Famer. But obviously, the final decision is up to Rodgers. Well, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio has figured out a date when Rodgers could finally become a Steeler.

Aaron Rodgers becoming a Steeler is still up in the air, but rookie QB Will Howard is open to the possibility. 👀

He believes Rodgers could be in Pittsburgh when the Steelers start their OTAs, i.e., May 27th. “Steelers only have six OTA days before the mandatory minicamp. Teams can have up to 10, I think he will be there next Tuesday, May 27, when the OTAs phase three begins,” Florio stated. Actually, this ain’t the only positive update the Steelers have received surrounding Aaron Rodgers.

Aaron Rodgers’ move to the Steelers gets a major boost

At the start of the offseason, the Steelers faced a lot of competition in their pursuit of Rodgers. The Giants and the Vikings were two of their primary competitors. However, since those early days, it’s the Steelers who have prevailed. They even managed to bring Rodgers in for a meeting at their facility a few months ago. Obviously, he hasn’t signed even after multiple advances made by the Steelers. Still, the hope hasn’t evaporated yet. But once Saints veteran QB Derek Carr suddenly chose to retire, it was presumed that they could also join the race to land Rodgers.

Considering they only have a rookie QB, Tyler Shough as an expected starter, Rodgers could have excellently played the role of a veteran QB. Logically, it looked like a move that could have happened. However, NOLA.com’s Jeff Duncan has since stated that the Saints aren’t interested in the 41-year-old even after Carr’s retirement. “No surprise here, but Aaron Rodgers never really was a consideration for the Saints in the wake of the Derek Carr retirement. At their current stages, they don’t make sense for him, and he doesn’t make sense for them.”

So, it’s either the Steelers or retirement for Rodgers. There’s no two-way around his future anymore. So, right now, the only possible deadline that has been floated is May 27. Either it could happen before it, or the 4-time NFL MVP may have another surprise in store for us.
