IF this week’s Chelsea Flower Show is inspiring you to spruce up your outside space, it needn’t cost a fortune.
Here are some tips to give it a boost on a budget . . .
BLOOM TIME: A rose garden is a timeless feature for any special space and you can get seeds from £2-£3 at most garden centres.
The flowers do best in full sun, so look for somewhere that basks in rays at least six hours a day. Plant in pots or borders but water regularly without waterlogging the soil.
Or head to Lidl for lavender from £2.99. These hardy plants are easy to care for and smell beautiful. The supermarket also has bedding plants from £1.99 which can brighten up borders with instant colour.
LAWN CARE: Luscious green grass is the centre feature of any garden. The key to it looking healthy and vibrant is to take a “little and often” approach to cutting, according to Peter Chaloner from Cobra garden machinery.
He said: “Shorter cuts will stimulate grass growth and encourage the blades to thicken over time.
“Mowing regularly, removing a short amount each time will avoid scalping the lawn and will result in easier, quicker mowing but also a healthier, greener lawn with less weeds in the long run.”
Remove weeds when you see them and water regularly, especially in dry periods.
COMPOST HEAP: If you have the space, create your own compost pile to enrich the soil of your garden without having to buy extra products.
The heap should be a mixture of green and and brown waste. For example mix green grass cuttings with dead twigs and leaves, according to the National Trust.
Cut down the waste to help it decompose quicker and turn the heap at least once to help the outer layers decompose. It can take anything from two months to a year for it all to break down.
It is ready when it is all brown with a crumbly texture and does not smell unpleasant.
