Todd McFarlane has opened up about how he wants the long-awaited Spawn movie to feel. The comic book creator has been developing the film for over a decade under Blumhouse Productions. In a new update, he expressed his wishes for the movie to be “dark and gritty,” similar to other horror blockbusters in recent years.
Speaking with Dread Central, McFarlane compared Spawn’s tone to that of the recent summer hit Backrooms. “It should just be really dark and gritty and unsettling.”
He added, “When I see examples like Obsession or Backrooms, you go, ‘The audience will consume this.’ We don’t need to do superhero. As a matter of fact… we should be trying to do something different because, again, we’re not going to have a $200 million budget like other superhero movies.”
What else did Todd McFarlane say about the Spawn movie?
In addition to discussing the movie’s tone, McFarlane provided a disappointing update for fans. Despite working on it for so many years, it appears Spawn will take even longer to grace the big screen.
“We’re just still trying to get the script right,” the President of Image Comics said. “I know it’s frustrating to everybody, especially me. I haven’t signed off because I just am not reading what I have in my head.”
McFarlane added that in his conversations with other writers working on the project, the bottleneck has been that they’re either “going too far off the reservation, or they’re being too loyal to it.” The writer added that he doesn’t want the film to be a simple retelling of the opening issues of the Spawn comics.
Fans wanting to see more of the superhero can look forward to the animated film featuring the voices of Mark Hamill & Keith David. It’s unclear when that movie will be released, even though it’s almost complete.
There is no official release date attached to the live-action Spawn reboot. A previous update had revealed that it was being developed with the title King Spawn. Jamie Foxx is still attached to star as the leading superhero.
