Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Talay Riley died from ‘sharp force’ trauma to his torso, an inquest opening has heard.
The musician’s death was confirmed on June 7 after the Metropolitan Police were called to an address in Silvertown, east London, on reports of a stabbing.
Real name Mark Orabiyi, the 35-year-old, who collaborated with Craig David, Dua Lipa, Jessie J, and Usher, died at the scene.
A post-mortem examination has since concluded that Orabiyi died of injuries sustained to either his chest or abdomen with a sharp, pointed instrument.
Area coroner Nadia Persaud said she would not set any directions for the inquest as the police investigation into Orabiyi’s death is ongoing, and she would suspend the inquest if charges are brought.
On June 5, three people were arrested on suspicion of murder.
Since then, a 27-year-old man has been released on bail pending further inquiries, and a 24-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman were released with no further action after being questioned.
Ms Persaud said Orabiyi’s family, who are aware of the inquest opening, have been made ‘interested persons’, meaning they will be able to make submissions and question witnesses to a future inquest.
In their initial tribute following confirmation of Orabiyi’s death, his family described him as a ‘beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend’.
‘He brought love, light, and joy to our family and to all who knew him,’ they said.
‘We will always cherish his kindness, beautiful spirit, and remarkable talent. His presence touched many lives, and his memory will remain in our hearts forever.
‘May his soul rest in perfect peace.’
