Sing 3 & Secret Life of Pets 3 Gets Fresh Updates After Years of Silence

Illumination just broke its silence on two sequels fans have been waiting years to hear about. The studio’s CEO shared fresh development updates on both Sing 3 and The Secret Life of Pets 3 during a new interview.

Chris Meledandri shares updates on Sing 3 and Secret Life of Pets 3

Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri confirms that both Sing 3 and The Secret Life of Pets 3 remain in active development at the studio. He shared the updates during an exclusive interview with Collider, published on June 19, 2026. Meledandri expressed enthusiasm for both projects, stating, “These are clearly two movies that not only do I love, but the filmmakers love them.”

The studio has been developing a third Secret Life of Pets film for a while now, as Meledandri previously teased the project during an interview with Variety. However, the studio took its time finding the right story for the sequel. He explained, “It took us a while to come back to Pets, waiting for an idea that we felt really would earn its place.”

The CEO also confirmed that Chris Renaud will return to direct. Renaud co-directed the original Despicable Me and helmed both previous Pets films. Meledandri added, “We are well underway, working hard on an idea that I’m hoping that we’ll make soon.”

Meanwhile, Sing 3 also continues to progress at the studio. Writer-director Garth Jennings returns to lead creative development on the threequel. Meledandri revealed that Jennings “is focusing all of his energy right now with the team at Illumination” on the project. He also teased fresh creative directions for the franchise. The CEO noted that the film will honor what audiences love while “also introducing some entirely new ideas into the story.”

Meledandri suggested that official announcements for both films could arrive in the near future. He stated, “Both Sing and Pets are getting a tremendous amount of attention inside the studio.” He then added, “I expect we’ll have some announcements to make about both of them relatively soon.” The studio currently has its slate mapped out through 2030.

Illumination’s next release, Minions & Monsters, opens in theaters on July 1, 2026.
