The 2026 midterms were a devastating loss for the GOP. Not only did the GOP lose the House and Senate, they lost both by substantial margins and Democrats flipped several red strongholds.

While things may look bad for the GOP long term, they did experience a couple of bright spots.

For starters, not every state shifted left. States like Maine and New York shifted right.

Maine’s rightward trend helped the GOP achieve one of it’s very few flips this cycle, as they won the House race in Maine’s 2nd Congressional district for the first time in eight years.

New York elected Democrats at every statewide level, but most of the state trended to the right, despite the massive blue wave nationwide.

Florida was the GOP’s best swing state performance, as they managed to hold on to every statewide race and House seat, retaining a 20-8 seat advantage.

Republican Byron Donalds, R-FL, managed to defeat Democrat David Jolly D-FL, to become the state’s first black Governor. Senator Ashley Moody, R-FL, also fended off Democratic Socliast Angie Nixon, D-FL. Not a single House in Incumbent in Florida.

On the House side, many seats Democrats one were in GOP-leaning districts by close margins. Many of these seats are likely to flip back in the GOP column in 2028 and these Democratic gains could be wiped out.

Several competitive Senate races also showed weakness in Democrats narrative that they have completely redrawn the map and have put deep red states in play for future elections.

Deep red states had closer margins than swing states. In States like Ohio, Iowa, Kansas, and South Carolina, Democratic Senate victories remained 5 points or lower.

In Ohio former Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown, D-OH, will return to the Senate after ousting Incumbent GOP Senator Jon Husted, R-OH by a margin of 5 points.

Brown under-performed Democrats nationwide and won by a much lower margin than Democrats that won in states like Georgia, North Carolina, and Texas, all winning by double digits.

Republicans will almost certainly take back that seat in 2028, as this was a special election and Brown will be forced to run for another full 6 year term in 2028, a Presidential year.

In Iowa, Democrat Josh Turek, D-IA, defeated Republican Ashley Hinson, R-,IA, by only 4 percentage points a massive under-performance from other Democrats nationwide.

Kansas shows a similar example, as Democrat Adam Hamilton, D-KS, defeated Republican Incumbent Roger Marshall, R-KS, by a margin of 5 points.

Even in South Carolina, Democrat Annie Andrews, D-SC couldn’t achieve a win larger than 5 points against Incumbent Darline Graham, R-SC, who proved to be a flawed candidate.

A lot of these Senate seats will most certainly flip back in 2032, which will be a Presidential year.

In Michigan, Senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed, D-MI, also under-performed other Democrats nationwide and won his election by 7 points, remaining in the single digits and indicating that Michigan is still a swing state on the Senate level.

Even though the GOP lost the House popular vote by around 13 points, Republicans still received close to 50,000,000 votes, which shows that they still have a solid base of voters that will be needed in future election cycles.

The night also could’ve gone a lot better for Progressives, as candidates that were backed by Bernie Sanders had performed the worst in 2026 competitive Senate races, even if some of them won.

A bright spot for President Trump himself, is that he is likely to lose around a total of 45-50 combined House and Senate seats , which only ranks 8th on the top 10 Presidents with the biggest midterm loses.

Even Democratic Presidents like Barrack Obama and Bill Clinton had worse midterm loses than President Trump. Clinton lost 63 seats in 1994 and ranks 4th; Obama lost 69 seats and ranks 2nd.

The narrative that Independent candidates can flip deep red states also fell flat on it’s head, as no independent won their respective races.

the most watched race with an independent was the Nebraska Senate race.

Mechanic and independent candidate, Dan Osborn ran for Senate in 2026, after initially running in 2024 before losing that same year. Osborn once again lost his race, making him a two-time loser. He also barely over performed his 2024 result.

Other independents running for Senate such as Todd Achilles in Idaho and Brian Bengs in South Dakota lost their races by double digits. In

The most surprising win for the GOP was in Guam, as the Governorship there flipped red and the GOP now has a trifecta there.

Despite the 2026 midterms being a disaster for the GOP, they still managed to show some bright spots that suggest that things aren’t over and that this Democratic victory may be temporary.
