Sharon Stone Explains Why She Initially Wasn’t Excited to Star in Ryan Murphy’s TV Show

Sharon Stone has revealed why she initially showed little excitement when Ryan Murphy offered her a role in his Netflix series. Although Murphy had specifically written the part with Stone in mind, the actress wanted to read the script before deciding whether the project was right for her.

Speaking to Variety, Stone recalled Murphy taking her to lunch and telling her about Ratched. “Ryan Murphy took me out to lunch and he said, ‘I wrote you a part.’ And I said, ‘OK.’ And he said, ‘Well, you don’t seem to be very excited.’ I said, ‘Well, I don’t know what it is yet.’ He was not very happy with me that I wasn’t just excited that he did it,” Stone said.

“I didn’t want to tell him that people write parts for me with a bit of regularity, and I don’t take all of them. Clearly, they’re not as special as Mr. Murphy,” she added.

Stone wanted to understand the character and the story before committing. Her response surprised Murphy, who had expected a stronger reaction. However, after reading the script, Stone ultimately agreed to join the series as Lenore Osgood.

Stone played Lenore Osgood in Ratched, Murphy’s 2020 prequel series to One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. The show also stars Sarah Paulson as a younger version of Nurse Mildred Ratched and explores her rise within the mental health system.

Lenore is a wealthy woman who becomes obsessed with getting revenge against Dr. Richard Hanover, played by Jon Jon Briones. She blames the doctor for a medical procedure that left her son Henry severely disfigured and eventually places a huge bounty on his life.

Stone brought a theatrical style to the role, with Lenore appearing in elaborate outfits and often accompanied by her pet capuchin monkey. The character’s wealth, anger, and eccentric behavior made her one of the show’s more distinctive supporting characters.

The role also showed why Murphy had wanted Stone for the part. Rather than simply accepting the opportunity because of the creator attached to it, Stone took time to judge the material for herself before signing on.
