Birmingham Phoenix have dismissed head coach Shane Bond following a bottom-of-the-table finish in the 2026 season of The Hundred. The decision, finalized on October 7, comes after the franchise managed just one victory in eight matches, concluding the campaign with seven consecutive losses.

The move marks a swift intervention by the club’s leadership during its first season under a new private ownership model. In early 2026, investment firm Knighthead Capital Management, alongside minority investor and England international Jude Bellingham, took control of the franchise with expectations for a competitive showing in the West Midlands.

James Thomas, Warwickshire’s Director of Cricket, confirmed the departure following an end-of-season review involving the board and the cricket committee. Bond was halfway through a two-year contract that was originally intended to run through the end of the 2027 season. Management framed the coaching change as a necessary step after evaluating all aspects of the 2026 campaign.

The Phoenix’s performance was significantly hindered by the loss of key personnel before the first ball was bowled. Captain Jacob Bethell was ruled out for the entirety of the tournament due to injury, depriving the squad of its primary leadership figure and a core all-rounder. Despite the personnel challenges, the inability to arrest a mid-season slump led to the franchise finishing at the bottom of the standings.

The timing of Bond’s dismissal is strategic, as the franchise looks toward the 2027 season. The Hundred’s player retention window is scheduled to open on October 16, 2026. By moving now, the Phoenix board allows a new coaching staff the opportunity to influence which players are retained and to shape the squad ahead of the next player draft.
