Shakur Stevenson Bites the Dust as Rolly Romero Saves Canelo Alvarez From Embarrassment

Just a day ago, Amanda Serrano highlighted a stinging fact. 324 of the total number of punches she threw in the Katie Taylor rematch connected. Far greater than what Teofimo Lopez, Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney, and Canelo Alvarez achieved collectively. Now, Serrano made a one vs. many comparison, something a few would disagree with. Where the narrative becomes incriminating is that, out of the four, many took strong exception to Canelo’s listless performance.

Now slated to face Terence Crawford in September, Canelo has been at the receiving end of some piercing jabs for the least number of punches thrown in a 12-round fight in CompuBox history. However, perhaps unbeknownst to him, the Mexican superstar enjoys enormous support across several corners. Rolando Romero rushed to his aid when a question prompted him to pick a match, either Devin Haney’s or Canelo’s, ‘to fall asleep to.’ Thanks to his shocking victory over Ryan Garcia, the former lightweight welterweight and now welterweight (regular) titleholder is all smiles. So joining hosts Danza and Keto in the latest episode of their podcast, ‘The Danza Project,‘ Romero decided to kill two birds with one stone. Help Canelo, but ensure Shakur Stevenson eats crow.

Shakur leads all the way!

“I’ve got an interesting question for you,” Danza said before adding, “You’re taking a long flight tomorrow. If you had one fight to fall asleep to, is it going to be Devin’s or Canelo’s?” The versed ones should find it easy to gauge from where the question came.

Though he won his comeback fight at the Times Square ‘Fatal Fury,‘ Devin Haney faced a slew of critiques for his lackluster performance against a fading former unified champion. Things didn’t help Canelo either, who was slammed for an underwhelming fight on Saturday night. The Mexican icon became an undisputed champion once again. But the way William Scull fight unfolded left many seething with anger.

So whom did Rolando Romero pick – Haney or Alvarez? Neither. “Shakur’s,” the Las Vegas native replied. The response had everyone burst into laughter. Though obviously taunting, Romero pointed out that Devin Haney may have the tag of being boring. But his last fight, against Ryan Garcia, was ‘super entertaining,’ he insisted.

Giving Haney the props he deserves, Romero highlighted how he got up and fought despite Garcia knocking him down several times. What did Shakur Stevenson do instead? “It’s not like Shakur, who f**king wants to go drop around the ring like a f**king grasshopper,” he said.

When Danza tried to defend Stevenson, Romero asked, “Who has Shakur fought?” in comparison to Devin Haney, who fought the likes of Vasyl Lomachenko and Jorge Linares.

For one, Romero deserves the credit for not vacillating in his stand on Shakur Stevenson. He has always been fairly consistent. As always, the feeling has been mutual. Even two years ago he stated that Stevenson is perhaps the most ‘boring’ fighter in the world. “At least Devin Haney tries to knock people,” Romero said.

He continued, “That’s that guy who will put anybody to sleep outside the room, not inside the ring, because that’s like he’s the most boring fighter in the history of boxing, and they can say whatever they want; they could hype him up and all that stuff, but I really feel bad for him because there’s no way they could put him on pay-per-view; he can’t sell a fight.”

Now, whether one agrees with Rolando Romero is purely subjective. But yes, Shakur Stevenson has often come under scrutiny for not producing exciting fights. Even when he knocked out Josh Padley in February, many expressed unhappiness at the way the match evolved. However, those who have a nuanced understanding of boxing may perhaps beg to differ.
