Sense and Sensibility’s 2026 trailer, which features stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Hanna star Esmé Creed-Miles, has finally dropped.

The Focus Features film is the first mainstream English language adaptation of the Austen novel to hit our screens since the BBC’s 2008 TV series

And if we’re talking about the big screen here, it’s been decades since the 1995 film, written by Emma Thompson and directed by Ang Lee. It featured Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson (she acted in it too), and Alan Rickman. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards.

It might seem like those are pretty big Regency-style boots to fill, because, well, they are.

But fans have been impressed so far.

The trailer, which opens on dishevelled Marianne Dashwood laying in a field, shows the family’s financial ruin following the patriarch’s death (a common theme in Austen’s work).

A distraught Mrs Dashwood (Caitríona Balfe) seems unable to handle her change in circumstance. Meanwhile, protagonist Isabelle (Daisy Edgar-Jones) meets the “esteem”-able (is that what the kids call it now?) Edward Ferrars (Pride’s George McKay).

They end up in a ramshackle house before meeting the legendary Willoughby (Frank Dillane).

Moody and dramatic shots intersperse fun, flirting, and financial ruin – what could be truer to the text?

Fans have already begun to praise the snippet, with an X poster writing: “the first trailer looks absolutely gorgeous.”

Another wrote, “I’m so seated” (same).

“Whoever did [George] mackay’s [Edward Ferrar’s] hair needs a big fat kiss and raise we WILL be seated,” someone else agreed.

Edgar-Jones had teased the trailer on Instagram yesterday, saying: “So excited to share a little glimpse into Sense and Sensibility. This story, this cast, and this experience have meant so much to me – I can’t wait to share it with you this fall. In theatres in the UK 9/25 and US 10/16. Trailer out tomorrow.”

The movie is set to come out in the UK on September 25.
