11 of the last 24 days of May 2025, Scottie Scheffler has been on the field playing. He did add two titles to his cabinet: the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, and the 2025 PGA Championship. The latter being the biggest one. But that’s a lot of traveling, practice, and competition in a short period. With the latest update from the Colonial Country Club, it seems that his decision to compete the week after lifting the Wanamaker Trophy might cost him big time.

At the tee on the 381-yard par-4 second hole, Scheffler lined up for another excellent drive, looking to match the birdie effort from round one. It was his 11th hole of the day, and he was already 1-over par for the day, barely making it past the projected cutline. To better his 344-yard tee shot from the first round, Scottie stretched a little too much on the downswing. As showcased in the video shared by journalist Julio Valdera, Scheffler was seen holding his back after overexerting himself on the drive.

That raised the question, “Did Scottie Scheffler Just Hurt His Back After That Drive?!” Valdera also seemed to believe that, as his tweet read, “Scottie Scheffler was seen wincing in pain after his tee shot on hole 2 of the second round of the Charles Schwab Challenge. 📽 @espn.” To the naked eye, it seemed like “He looked like he was in a lot of pain,” as one of the fans stated. Considering the round Scheffler had after that, there might be some truth behind it.

For the remainder of the round, he added another birdie to his name before a 9th-hole bogey. That ensured that his score for the day remained at 1-over par 71. He ended the day 10 strokes away from the top of the table and probably with a back injury. Comparing his stats from Thursday, we can also see that Scheffler had one of the worst strokes gained records in the second round. His driving accuracy may have improved, but it came at the cost of a possible injury. With the 2025 U.S. Open creeping in slowly, this doesn’t bode well for the 15-time PGA Tour winner.

That raises the question: Did Scottie Scheffler really need to play in the ongoing Charles Schwab Challenge?

Scottie Scheffler’s plans for 2025 come back to bite him

Only a few months ago, Scottie Scheffler was recovering from a hilarious injury that had put him out of commission for a month. He was missing in action throughout January 2025 because of a hilarious Christmas nightmare that saw him injure his hand. Ever since his return, he struggled to get a result in his favor, failing to win in eight consecutive events. For comparison, his worst losing streak in 2024 was five in a row at the beginning of the season. Yet, he somehow found form and won at TPC Craig Ranch and Quail Hollow within three weeks.

With a drop in performance at the Charles Schwab Challenge on Friday, it certainly seems that he may have sustained an injury. Maybe the schedule is proving to be too hectic for him. Not that others are not doing it. Jordan Spieth has had a far more hectic schedule in the same period. But then again, he has a lot more to prove at the moment, having gone winless for over three years. Scheffler didn’t need that. He could have played in the Signature event next week, the 2025 Memorial Tournament. That would have still fit into his plan of taking some time off before a major in 2025. Skipping the Canadian Open would have provided him that. Then why did Scottie Scheffler play at the Colonial Country Club only a week after an intense battle for his first PGA Championship win?
