Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has announced his decision to vote in favor of keeping the government operational, cautioning that a shutdown would have dire consequences for Americans and would merely strengthen the positions of President Trump and Elon Musk.
“It is my responsibility to make the right decision for the nation in order to alleviate the harms faced by the American people. Hence, I will cast my vote for keeping the government open and ensuring it doesn’t close down,” Schumer stated during his remarks on the Senate floor on Thursday.

Democrats have criticized their Republican counterparts for their reluctance to pass funding legislation, while their own party is nearing a federal shutdown.
On Wednesday, Schumer indicated that his party would reject the spending bill put forth by Republicans that passed through the House, as the impending deadline of Friday midnight requires Congress to act to prevent a government closure.
Schumer proposed a one-month spending bill to ensure government operations continue until April 11, allowing Democrats more time to negotiate. The continuing resolution, which was approved by the House on Tuesday in a nearly party-line vote of 217-213, would keep the government functioning for the next six months, until the fiscal year ends on September 30.
