Sarah Sherman has responded to the controversy surrounding her portrayal of Aimee Lou Wood on Saturday Night Live. The sketch, which aired in April 2025, was a parody of The White Lotus. Sherman played Wood’s character, Chelsea, with exaggerated features, including large false teeth. 

After the episode aired, Wood criticized the portrayal as “mean and unfunny” on social media. On Instagram, she wrote, “Yes, take the piss for sure – that’s what the show is about- but there must be a cleverer, more nuanced, less cheap way?”

In a Vanity Fair interview published on May 13, Sherman responded to the backlash and expressed regret for upsetting Wood. Sherman said, “I f**king obviously never meant to hurt anyone’s feelings. Never in a million years did I get into comedy to make anyone upset.” She further added, “I feel terrible that anyone would feel bad.” Sherman further discussed the difficulties of navigating pop culture satire while being sensitive to others.

Despite the initial tension, the situation appears to have been resolved. Sherman later reached out to Wood with an apology and a bouquet of flowers. Wood shared her appreciation for the gesture on Instagram, posting a thank you to Sherman.

The sketch, titled “The White POTUS,” primarily focused on satirizing Donald Trump and his inner circle. In the sketch, James Austin Johnson plays the President, and Sherman’s Chelsea is the only character from The White Lotus included.
