While Gellar's Buffy Summers took the lead as the slayer, Hannigan's Willow Rosenberg transformed from her shy, nerdy best friend into a powerful Wiccan who assists Buffy against the forces of darkness. In February 2025, Gellar was confirmed to be doing a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, with the pilot set to be directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao.
