Sandra Hüller’s upcoming movie could put her in contention for an Academy Award. Rose is a war movie that is set in 17th-century Germany during the devastating aftermath of the Thirty Years’ War. Hüller has already earned major accolades for her performance in the drama, including the Silver Bear for Best Lead Performance at the Berlin International Film Festival.

The official synopsis reads, “Amidst the turmoil of the Thirty Years’ War, somewhere in Germany, a mysterious soldier appears in a secluded protestant village. Small and quiet, his face disfigured by a scar, this stranger declares himself the heir of a long-abandoned farmstead and produces a document to support his claim to the suspicious villagers.”

“With time, he overcomes their doubts and proves himself a hard-working, God-fearing man, becoming part of the community in a quest for acceptance built on impossible deceit. The true and twisted tale of a deceiver of land and folk, who, defying her birth as a woman, comported herself as a man and committed many a wicked deed,” the synopsis continues.

What happens in Sandra Hüller’s Rose trailer?

In the trailer, Hüller appears as a woman named Rose who disguises herself as a man in a secluded German Protestant village. When describing her character, a male voice says, “In the village, they call him a soldier and a misfit. There’s something mysterious about him.”

As the trailer progresses, the Digger actress is shown living in the shadows while trying to blend in with the villagers. Disguised as a man, Rose claims the status and freedom denied to women at the time. She says, “I never before was able to think of a tomorrow. I was far too busy surviving each day.”

Also, Rose is married to Suzanna, an “unblemished, god-fearing” woman, in an arranged marriage. Although the two manage to live together for a while, keeping their secrets, Suzanna eventually learns the truth, leading to a series of gut-wrenching horrors for women of that era.

The 94-minute drama is directed by Markus Schleinzer, best known for Neverland and Veni Vidi Vici. Schleinzer wrote the movie alongside Alexander Brom. Apart from Hüller, the drama also stars Marisa Growaldt, Robert Gwisdek, and Godehard Giese. Johannes Schubert, Philipp Worm, Tobias Walker, and Karsten Stöter serve as producers.

Rose premiered at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival, where Hüller won the Silver Bear for Best Lead Performance. The Anatomy of a Fall and Project Hail Mary star was also honored with a Silver Medallion at the 53rd Telluride Film Festival.

Rose will be released in the theaters on December 11, 2026.
