Vigor, strength, and Hawkeye precision. All telltale signs of volleyball, and with the Women’s Pro Volleyball Federation League entering its second season, all fans are excited. Bigger stakes, grander matches, and more experienced players all make the fray much more interesting. And one of the biggest matches this season will be San Diego Mojo vs. Orlando Valkyries.
The match is about to happen on the 9th of January and will be the season opener for the league. With the league generating so much hype, fans are eagerly anticipating this season. The Olympic gold medal in volleyball has shifted everyone’s attention to the season opener. For all the fans who want to know more about this, today we cover head-to-head stats, where to watch, and key players for this season.
Head-to-Head Stats: Mojo vs. Valkyries
Last season in the Pro Volleyball League, San Diego was one of the teams to look out for as they won 13 out of their 24 matches and ended up in third place. On the other hand, the Valkyries were one of the bottom teams. Only managing to win 8 out of their 24 matches, the Orlando were joint second last on the table. But when it comes to head-to-head, they fare much better.
As part of the current Pro Volleyball Federation League regular season plays, each team faces the rest four times. And in the four times that the two teams have played, the wins have been evenly distributed between the two teams. The first time that both these teams met was at Viejas Arena, San Diego, and the away team won in a major upset.
With 3 sets to 2, the Valkyries won against the powerhouse. They met a further three times in April and May, but the Valkyries could not repeat the upset. With all three encounters ending at 3-2, the Mojos steamrolled through their competition and booked a ticket to the playoffs. Mojos, on the other hand, did not move past the regular season. This was the tale of the tape for the two teams. Moving on, let’s discuss where viewers can watch the matches live.
How to watch the game?
With the amount of oomph and fanfare that the Pro Volleyball Federation League got last year, it was a given that soon it would get TV time. And with two major TV stations getting the broadcasting rights, it happened sooner than later. For the fans, they can start viewing the matches on either Fox or CBS from 9th January onwards.
The first match will be tonight’s season opener between San Diego and Orlando, and other matches will follow it. From Fox, the two channels will be FS1 and FS2, and it will be showing 12 matches. The remaining 12 matches will be split by CBSN and CBSSN on the CBS network. Both semifinals and finals will also be available to the viewers. And believe it or not, this will be the first time that CBS is showing a volleyball match on their network.
This makes a significant shift from last season when the league was struggling for both sponsors and broadcasters. This simply shows how much the league has grown. In addition to this, just like last year, the matches will be livestreamed on YouTube. Now that you are going to watch the match, let’s discuss which players you should look out for.
Players to watch in the league
Among all the star players who are currently playing for both of these teams, the one to watch out for is Adora Anae. The Hawaiian is a powerhouse in the Pro Volleyball league and was the lone shining star for the Valkyries. With a 6-foot-2 frame and a ravenous appetite for kills, she is one of the best players in the league.
Newcomer Norah Sis is also a name to look out for. The youngster is joining the league as the 2022 BIG EAST player of the season. And with an illustrious collegiate career, it looks like this success will continue with the Pro League as well.
From the side of the Mojos, the big names to look out for are the duo of Leyla Blackwell and Devyn Robinson. Leyla, with her massive frame, is coming in hot this season, being a 3-time WCC honoree. Don’t underestimate Robinson; she served as one of the Mojos’ main pinch hitters last season. Both of these players are looking to win this year. With all these stars and a bigger screen to shine on, this year’s League will be special.
