Everybody’s got their limits. Even Sally Metcalfe. Now the Weatherfield legend faces a nightmare on Coronation Street, actress Sally Dynevor sheds some light on just how bad things will get for her character.

‘Sally thinks she is doing an okay job, but she is starting to struggle and will get to a breaking point where she just can’t cope’.

What’s breaking Sally? What would be too much for a woman who’s survived a domestic abuser, her husband’s misogynistic coercive controlling father, a long battle with breast cancer, a short lived political career, and of course, being married to Kevin Webster? (Michael Le Vell).

That would be her latest foster child, Lucky Parkinson (Anya Webster).

Sally and her husband Tim Metcalfe (Joe Duttine) have a long history of taking in kids from troubled homes. However, they don’t get much more troubled than Lucy, who is the daughter of Tim’s cousin, Richie (Nathan Sussex). Her mother Rachel was murdered in tragic circumstances, killed by Richie during a heated argument in self-defence.

At least that’s been Richie’s story.

Seeing Tim was the one who encouraged Richie to go home and make amends with Rachel, he carries an awful lot of guilt. Enough guilt to make him decide to give his traumatised cousin once removed a place under their roof. Sally is still not happy about this, as Sally Dynevor explains.

‘I don’t think she wanted to have Lucy at the beginning but she realised this is Tim’s second cousin so she felt like she couldn’t say no. He made her feel that she had done really well with the Michaelis children, and that she could make a huge difference to Lucy’s life. Sally thought ‘I am quite good at this. I will do it for Tim’.

However, it is becoming increasingly clear that Sally had no idea what she was taking on. While she was expecting a very damaged young lady with PTSD, she had no idea she was taking on the kid from The Omen.

We’ve already seen Lucy pinch her skin to make it look like Sally hurt her after her foster-mum called her out for daring little Shanice Michaelis to walk to the shops unsupervised. That behaviour is only going to get worse. Especially when Lucy lashes out over Sally looking at her art project. Has Sally met her match this time?’ Sally Dynevor certainly thinks so.

‘Absolutely. When Lucy says things to Sally like ‘you’re just like my mum.’ The way she treats Sally when Tim isn’t there is really quite scary, and she has to justify herself to Tim which is putting pressure on them as a couple. She has bitten off more than she can chew with Lucy. She is a very traumatised child. She has been through so much. Sally doesn’t have the skills for this. This is completely above her paygrade. She can’t do it.’

Lucy’s behaviour isn’t the only thing concerning Sally. She’s got certain misgivings about the events of that fateful night where Rachel was killed, and has her doubts about Richie’s version of events, as Sally Dynevor reveals.

‘Sally hasn’t been told that much. It’s just the odd things Lucy says. She hasn’t thought about Lucy being involved or her dad being the abusive one, but there are things that just don’t ring true and the fact that Lucy isn’t really bothered about her mum’s funeral are all a little bit strange.’

Given the responsibility Tim feels towards his cousin, this could be a real bump in the road for Weatherfield’s power couple. Could Lucy drive a wedge between Sally and Tim?

Can Sally and Tim make it through this in one piece? (Picture: ITV)

‘Definitely.’ Sally Dynevor insists. ‘Especially if Tim is determined to carry on with this and Sally just doesn’t want to.’

‘Of course, we learn later down the line what the circumstances were, but at this point Tim is feeling very guilty that he sent Richie home and what he finds there. So yes, it will cause problems for them.’
