Ryan Reynolds to Play a Villain in Netflix Movie Adaptation of Beloved Kids’ Book

Ryan Reynolds will be playing a villainous character in a new movie adaptation of a beloved children’s book.

Reynolds is best known for playing Wade Wilson/Deadpool in the MCU. There’s been much speculation regarding if Deadpool will show up in Avengers: Doomsday; however, whether or not that happens, the Green Lantern actor also has some other projects in the works. He’s currently attached to star, for example, in a live-action animated road comedy movie titled Animal Friends, which will be released in the United States next June from Warner Bros. Pictures.

In addition to Animal Friends, per Variety, Reynolds has now been cast as an “original villainous character” in a new film adaptation of Eloise that’s being made by Netflix. Newcomer Mae Schenk, meanwhile, has been cast as the titular character.

Written by Kay Thompson and illustrated by Hilary Knight, Eloise is a series of children’s books that were published in the 1950s. They follow the various happenings of a young girl who lives at the top of the Plaza Hotel in New York City with her nanny, her dog, and her turtle.

There were two made-for-TV Eloise movies, Eloise at the Plaza and Eloise at Christmastime, that were released in 2003. A number of other Eloise projects have been in development over the years, but never got off the ground, though there was a shortly lived animated series that aired in 2006 for 13 episodes.

The new Eloise movie is being directed by Amy Sherman-Palladino, who is known for creating Gilmore Girls and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, among other titles. The screenplay comes from Sherman-Palladino, Hannah Marks, and Linda Woolverton.

Plot details remain under wraps at this point, as the only thing that has been revealed is that the movie will be a “wholly original adventure.” No release date has yet been announced.
