Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern’s Love Interest Makes Her DCU Debut

Carol Ferris finally showed up in the DCU, and her debut wasn’t what anyone expected. HBO’s Lanterns Episode 6 quietly introduced the character, who was seen as Ryan Reynolds’ love interest in the 2011 film Green Lantern. However, this series features a new actress, replacing Blake Lively’s portrayal of the character from the movie.

DCU just brought its own Carol Ferris variant in Lanterns

HBO’s Lanterns Episode 6 introduced Carol Ferris to the DC Universe through actress Amie Mackenzie. The character appeared at Hal Jordan’s funeral, marking her first live-action DCU appearance. Blake Lively previously played Carol in the 2011 Green Lantern film opposite Ryan Reynolds.

Carol Ferris holds deep roots in DC Comics as Hal Jordan’s original love interest. Before becoming Green Lantern, Hal worked as a test pilot for Ferris Aircraft. Carol’s father founded the company, and she eventually took over its operations. Their romance has spanned nearly 70 years of comic book history.

The show keeps Carol’s relationship with Hal deliberately vague in this iteration. She simply implies a past romantic connection with him at the funeral. Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan wrote his own eulogy expecting a grand sendoff. Instead, only John Stewart, Sheriff Kerry Kane, Guy Gardner, and Carol attended.

Mackenzie brings a rich personal story to the role as a Denver-based actress. She became a fixture of Colorado theater for decades before transitioning to screen work. After surviving cancer, she booked her first on-screen part in Better Call Saul at age 53. She has since appeared in projects like The Madison and Mountainhead.

In the comics, Carol eventually gains powers through the Star Sapphire gem. The alien Zamarons abducted her and gave her psychic abilities through this gem. They also controlled her mind and compelled her to fight Hal Jordan. She later joined a group of Star Sapphires wielding rings powered by love.

Lanterns star Kelly Macdonald expressed interest in a Carol and Kerry interaction at the funeral. “Would have been lovely, wouldn’t it?” Macdonald said, per Decider. She also wanted a moment with Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner.
