A new Rust trailer for the controversial Western movie has been revealed, featuring Alec Baldwin as an outlaw. The movie is slated to make its debut on May 2, 2025, with Falling Forward Films and Ascending Media Group handling its theatrical and VOD distributions, respectively.

“In 1880s Wyoming, recently orphaned Lucas Hollister accidentally kills a rancher and is sentenced to hang. In a twist of fate, his estranged grandfather, the notorious outlaw Harland Rust, breaks him out of jail and takes him on the run toward Mexico,” reads the official synopsis. “As they flee across the unforgiving wilderness, the fugitive pair must outrun the determined U.S. Marshal Wood Helm and a ruthless bounty hunter named Preacher.”

What happens in the Rust trailer?

The video shows Baldwin’s character as he embarks on a harrowing journey to Mexico with his grandson. It also highlights some of the thrilling sequences from the movie. The cast also includes rances Fisher, Josh Hopkins, Travis Fimmel, Patrick Scott McDermott, Devon Werkheiser, Rhys Coiro, Xander Berkeley, Jake Busey, Abraham Benrubi, Travis Hammer, Nick Farnell, Sam Carson, Richard Gunn, and Easton Malcolm.

Rust is written and directed by Joel Souza, based on a story by Baldwin and Souza. Prior to its release, the movie faced a serious controversy involving the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who was killed on the set of the movie after a live round was discharged from Baldwin’s prop gun.

Following the incident, Baldwin was charged with involuntary manslaughter. However, “the case was dismissed in July on the grounds that the prosecution had failed to turn over evidence.” Besides Baldwin, the film’s armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was also held responsible for the incident. She is currently serving an 18-month sentence.

The film is produced by Baldwin, Matt DelPiano, Grant Hill, Anjul Nigam, Ryan Donnell Smith, Melina Spadone, Ryan Winterstern, and Nathan Klingher. Executive producers are Matthew Hutchins, Stephen Marinaccio, Allen Cheney, Rachel Robinson-Zetzer, Matthew Helderman, Luke Taylor, Stephen Hays, Peter Graham, Carter Boehm, and Richard Gray. According to a previous report, the producers won’t gain financially from the movie. Instead, the profits will directly go to Hutchins’ husband Matt and son Andros as part of the settlement.
