Romance in fantasy is not new: it’s a tale as old as time. Think of ancient mythologies, rife with romantic tension, vengeance, and let’s be honest, a bunch of sex. Then there’s Shakespeare, who included witches, ghosts, and magic among romantic plots.
These two genres are an age-old pair, complementing and reinventing each other in every era. That reinvention has led to the latest boom of storytelling, often referred to as “romantasy.”
The purpose of this article isn’t to argue the popularity or worth of romantasy. The genre is magnetic and polarizing. Some hate the term, some love it, and many find themselves somewhere in the middle. You may even hear readers say, “I like fantasy romance but not romantasy” or vice versa. That might make your brain short-circuit, because they’re the same, right?
