The Red Sox are in trouble. Their offense isn’t delivering, and the experienced people on board don’t seem to be able to fix things. So who’s going to be the savior? Well, the answer might lie in the minors, where a certain Roman Anthony is making waves. His latest hit with the bat might have strengthened his case even further.
It wouldn’t be wrong to say Roman Anthony plays baseball with a home run chip. His Triple-A Worcester performance this season has been outstanding. He has a.916 OPS into June, impressing night after night. Anthony is hitting .290/.421/.495 with 10 home runs and 29 RBIs in 57 games. These are elite numbers for any player, but despite that, the Red Sox aren’t sure of his promotion just yet. Why?
Well, it’s probably because the people in charge want to keep backing the current roster, but Anthony just keeps making his case stronger with every passing game. In his last outing, he belted a 497-foot grand slam.
On Saturday night, when everyone was busy watching the Red Sox against the Yankees, the 21-year-old made a statement. A loud and clear one that might have reached the ears of the Boston front office.
What were the results? Worcester won the game 10-4 against the Rochester Red Wings. And not only that, Anthony’s homer just broke all the records. It was the longest homer not only in the minors but in the majors, too this year.
Anthony was picked by the Red Sox in the 2022 MLB Draft, and ever since, his career has taken off.
He moved up the ranks, going from Rookie ball to Single-A Salem, then High-A Greenville, and finally Double-A Portland. He is Baseball America’s top prospect and was invited to the major league camp this spring. It was believed he might get a chance in the majors this year, but not to be so far.
Anthony keeps blazing up Triple-A. That’s great, yes. But what about the majors? Only the front office knows.
Well, Alex Cora wants to maximize what they currently have on the roster. He said, “As of now, this is the roster that we have and we are gonna continue to maximize that. We are very proud of the work he’s putting down there. And like I said last week, he’s not knocking at the doors, he’s kicking it. So we’ll see what happens in the future.”
The Red Sox must not look too far beyond if they’re aiming October Glory. They have got the right option in their ranks. They probably just need to show some urgency in terms of promoting him! Well, that’s what a renowned MLB insider believes.
Jeff Passan slams the Red Sox’s lack of Urgency in holding back Roman Anthony
As the Boston Red Sox’s season goes downhill, they fall further behind in the race for the playoffs. The ripple effect? More and more people are questioning their decision of not promoting their top prospect Roman Anthony.
ESPN’s MLB columnist Jeff Passan criticized the decision on the Section 10 Podcast, saying the “lack of urgency” was obvious.
He compared Boston’s bold offseason moves with their current decision. That includes signing Alex Bregman, trading for Garrett Crochet, and bringing Kristian Campbell on Opening Day. Why are they now reluctant to promote Anthony as the season is slipping away?
Passan emphasized Anthony’s importance, saying, “Every day Roman Anthony’s not in the big leagues, that’s a day he could have won a game for this team.”
The Red Sox’s record is not very shiny in the AL East. They are fourth with a record of 31-35. If things go like this, the playoffs are far from their reach, and Passan thinks the same.
Boston made substantial investments over the summer, as Passan pointed out. But they are delaying the most obvious call now. Any delay in Anthony’s promotion might back to haunt Boston if they don’t make the playoffs in 2025 and they wouldn’t want that.
Roman Anthony is having a great time in Triple-A. And the question looms: if not now, when?
