Robert Redford's contribution to cinema is too vast and significant to do it justice in one or a hundred pieces of writing. From being one of the biggest actors in Hollywood, starring in films such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, to founding the Sundance Film Festival and championing independent cinema, the memories conjured up in most fans' minds will be from decades long past. Still, in almost every decade, Redford made a new contribution to the cinematic landscape. More recently, perhaps one of Redford's most underrated performances came in 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier, when he played Alexander Pierce, the Secretary for the World Security Council and an undercover operative for HYDRA. Redford's appearance in the MCU was full of the gravitas and care that audiences came to expect from the actor, and his grounded performance stood in contrast to the other villains in the MCU at the time. In doing so, he gave the MCU the respectability it desperately needed heading into Phase 2 of the Infinity Saga.
