Robert Downey Jr. recently took to social media to share a Mother’s Day post dedicated to his wife and mother-in-law. Downey Jr., widely known for playing Tony Stark / Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is slated to return to the franchise as Doctor Doom. The Oscar-winner’s latest social media post features Marvel-inspired art work.

Robert Downey Jr. posts special Avengers: Doomsday tribute on Mothers’ Day

Avengers: Doomsday star Robert Downey Jr. celebrated Mother’s Day by sharing photos on Instagram. In the caption, he wrote, “The debt of gratitude is generational. There’s no immeasurably/fiercely exemplary Susan without- – her incomparable progenitor, Rosie Levin!! #happymothersday.”

In the first art piece, Downey Jr’s wife Susan appears as Susan Storm. The image has the words, “SUSAN “THE STORM” DOWNEY written at the top. Meanwhile, the names of the couple’s children, son Exton and daughter Avri, appear alongside those of Downey Jr and Susan. Downey Jr. has another son named Indio from his marriage to singer-songwriter and actress Deborah Falconer.

In the second art piece of the aforementioned post, Susan’s mother Rosie Levin appears to be sewing Doctor Doom’s cloak, with the character’s well-known mask resting beside her. The words in the image reads, “Even Dr. Doom needs a Mother!”

Downey Jr. has been part of the MCU since the beginning. He has appeared in the solo trilogy based around his character as well as frannchise crossover projects, He made his last appearance as the character in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, in which Tony sacrificed himself to save the universe.

At the SDCC in July 2024, it was revealed that Downey Jr. would be coming back to play Doctor Doom, an iconic supervillain from Marvel Comics. Previously, Julian McMahon has portrayed the character in Fantastic Four (2005) and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), while Toby Kebbell essayed the role in Fantastic Four (2015).

Downey Jr. will appear as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday (2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (2027). There are rumors that the character might appear in the post-credits scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which comes out on July 25, 2025.
