“Roach Won That Fight”: Joe Rogan Drops the Hammer on Gervonta Davis Over Controversial Lamont Roach Result

It’s been over two months since WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis was embarrassed in front of the world by Lamont Roach Jr. in their fight, a moment that shocked fans and shook the boxing world. Now, UFC commentator and podcaster Joe Rogan has opened up old wounds, as he shared his candid perspective on the controversial fight.

On March 1st, Davis entered the fight as a massive favorite to beat Roach Jr. However, as soon as the fight began, it became clear that ‘The Reaper’ was there to take Davis’ unblemished record into oblivion. After the controversial knee incident in the ninth round of the fight, the bout was eventually declared a majority decision draw following 12 rounds of action. However, many, including Terence Crawford, claimed Roach Jr. should have won the fight. Regardless, the pair was initially supposed to have their rematch on June 21, 2025, but that has since been pushed or canceled. Amid all this, Joe Rogan spoke about the fight in his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, episode #2320, featuring Tom Segura.

Discussing Devin Haney’s lackluster performance against Jose Ramirez in New York earlier this month, Rogan suggested some fighters are never the same after suffering their first loss, referring to Haney’s now-expunged majority decision loss to Ryan Garcia. This prompted Segura to bring up Gervonta Davis, wondering if something similar would happen to ‘Tank’.

“He had that fight with Lamont Roach where it was a draw, and it was a legit draw,” Rogan said before dropping the hammer on Davis. “You could even make the argument that Roach won that fight, and they’re going to fight again.” While Rogan is excited about the rematch, he highlighted that even great boxers reach a point in their career where they stop functioning at their best.

“I think it’s also for boxers, there’s a situation where you can only keep up the RPMs for so long. All the greats,  there’s a certain amount of times that you can keep training, a certain amount of times you can keep competing,” Rogan said during his podcast. However, is that really the case with Gervonta Davis? He definitely will have to prove his case, but when?

Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach Jr. rematch has a new date

The highly anticipated rematch between Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis and Lamont Roach Jr. has been officially scheduled for August 16 in Las Vegas, according to a report from The Ring’s senior insider Mike Coppinger. During that fight, Davis appeared to take a knee in Round 9 after a punch, but the referee did not rule it a knockdown—an officiating decision that would have handed Roach the victory if called differently.

Davis explained that grease from a hair product burned his eyes, forcing him to take a knee, and controversially, his corner was allowed to wipe his eyes during the round, despite such action being prohibited. Davis looks to reclaim clear dominance in the lightweight division, while Roach, the reigning WBA junior lightweight champion, aims to prove the first fight was no fluke.

That said, it appears there’s a lot riding on the rematch against Lamont Roach Jr. for Gervonta Davis. He will have to change the minds of Joe Rogan and the entire fan base who feel Davis was finally exposed. However, the question is, can he?
