Blade Runneris both one of the greatest science fiction films ever made and a notorious box office flop, as Ridley Scott’s 1982 classic underperformed in theaters upon its release, with some blame assigned to Warner Bros. for forcing him to edit his version of the ending. Although Blade Runner would go on to earn a passionate cult following over the years, which peaked after the release of “The Final Cut,” this didn't automatically turn the property into a massive franchise. Despite being equally brilliant and winning multiple Academy Awards, Denis Villeneuve’s sequel Blade Runner 2049underperformed financially compared to the sizable budget needed for its gorgeous visual experience. Given that this has always been a property that has appealed to hardcore science fiction buffs and cinephiles, Prime Video made the right decision in confirming that the upcoming Blade Runner 2099will be a miniseries and won’t be vying for a renewal.
