Richard Gere’s Dalai Lama documentary is now available on digital streaming. Wisdom of Happiness gives viewers a closer look at his message about happiness, compassion and finding peace during uncertain times.

Gere serves as an executive producer alongside Oren Moverman and several other producers. Directed by Barbara Miller and Philip Delaquis, the 90-minute docu-film features the 14th Dalai Lama speaking directly to viewers. It became available digitally on September 15 through Music Box Films.

The documentary presents the Dalai Lama in a personal conversation about inner peace and happiness. Rather than focusing on his public life, the film explores practical ideas for handling stress, uncertainty, and challenges in the modern world.

The project began taking shape in 2018, with the filmmakers later creating an intimate setup for the Dalai Lama to address viewers directly. They interviewed him in his private rooms in Dharamsala in early 2020. Manuel Bauer, who has documented him since 1990, handled the cinematography.

The Dalai Lama encourages compassion as a way to improve personal well-being and relationships with others. The film presents these ideas as broadly accessible, rather than limiting them to a specific religious audience. Its approach keeps the focus on everyday choices, emotional balance, and how people respond to one another.

The film premiered at the Zurich Film Festival in October 2024 before reaching wider audiences. It later opened in the United States in October 2025. The project was initiated by Walo Kamm.

Ariel Marx composed the film’s music, while Isai Oswald and Mike Selemon handled editing. Richard Gere has a long-standing connection with the Dalai Lama and helped bring the documentary to audiences as an executive producer.
