The NBA world is rallying around Klay Thompson after the Dallas Mavericks star lost his beloved English bulldog, Rocco, over the weekend. Rocco, who was 13 years old, was more than just a pet — he was family. Thompson often referred to Rocco as his “son,” a constant presence throughout his rise to NBA stardom.

Klay’s father, Mychal Thompson, broke the heartbreaking news on ESPN’s LA radio show, Mason & Ireland, saying, “We had to put Rocco, Klay’s dog, down over the weekend. It was time.” He added that while the family was understandably sad, Rocco had “a great, long life.”

Rocco’s impact on Klay’s life was deep and enduring. During his 2014 contract extension negotiations, Klay impatiently asked GM Bob Myers how long it would take because he “just wanted to go home to his dog.” That love never faded.

In 2022, Klay even joked about Rocco’s birthday being April 20th — a date he picked just to make it easier to remember.

Now, as the NBA community floods social media with condolences, it’s clear Rocco was loved beyond the Thompson family. Rest easy, Rocco — you were truly man’s best friend.

(This is a building story….)
