The protagonist of Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil has failed to impress some fans. Many moviegoers have taken to social media to voice their disappointment.

According to several fans, Bryan in Resident Evil (2026), played by Austin Abrams, is an “incompetent” character. Amid mixed reviews, many have particularly noted Bryan’s poor decisions throughout the movie.

BUT at times the main character’s incompetence done for suspense and comedic effect feels like you’re watching Forrest Gump survive Raccoon City. Hopefully a sequel introduces iconic characters from the games.”

Another user, @YuRaynus, gave the movie a 4/10, writing, “The first half is pretty good, but then the fat guy in a suit shows up and starts talking and it all goes to total shit. A climax so asinine and a protagonist so bafflingly stupid I almost walked out with only 5 minutes left.”

Despite the polarizing fan reviews on X, Resident Evil is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. The survival horror film currently holds a decisive 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer and a 91% score on the Popcornmeter.

Cregger’s Resident Evil takes place during events parallel to the 1998 Capcom game Resident Evil 2. It follows Bryan, a medical courier who must survive a zombie outbreak in Raccoon City during a delivery to Raccoon General Hospital.

In addition to Austin Abrams, the movie stars Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, Paul Walter Hauser, Johnno Wilson, and Sara Paxton.
