The upcoming Resident Evil movie is poised to deliver a franchise-record debut at the domestic box office, according to early projections. In fact, higher estimates peg the film's opening weekend haul to be around thrice that of the franchise's current record, held by Resident Evil: Afterlife. Sony is putting its might into the movie, giving it a major PLF and IMAX push on the strength of director Zach Cregger's recent success. The filmmaker broke out with the acclaimed horror epic Barbarian, and followed it up with the even more successful Weapons. Some wondered why he'd chosen a franchise reboot as his next project, but if these projections were to hold up, he will probably be looking at the biggest hit of his career in a few weeks.
