Amari Cooper has chosen to end his comeback attempt and retire from the NFL.

The veteran wide receiver had signed with the Las Vegas Raiders late in training camp but will now retire only days before the start of the season, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports.

Cooper, 31, retires after 10 NFL seasons and 10,033 receiving yards with 64 touchdown catches. He was a five-time Pro Bowler and a finalist for offensive rookie of the year in 2015.

Cooper began his career with parts of four seasons with the Raiders before a mid-season trade to the Cowboys in the middle of the 2018 season. He also played two seasons with the Browns and Bills, helping Buffalo reach the AFC title game last season.

After going all off-season without a new contract, Cooper returned to the Raiders on a one-year deal on Aug. 26.

“His ability to make unique catches is something that’s always stood out to me,” Raiders GM John Spytek said after signing Cooper. “He hasn’t been in a camp so we cannot have an expectation he’s in tip top shape and ready to play football. But we have a plan to bring him along.”

Now, one week later, Cooper has decided to retire from football before taking the field this season.
