As their pitching comes into question with a smattering of injuries, the Philadelphia Phillies are building up a contingency plan for the stretch run.

On Sunday, the Phillies signed right-handed pitcher Walker Buehler after he was released by the Boston Red Sox, and claimed lefty reliever Tim Mayza off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The move for Buehler was reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, while the claim on Mayza was announced by the team.

The timing of the moves is notable, as the final day for players to be post-season eligible after signing with new teams is Sept. 1.

Buehler, 31, was released by the Red Sox on Friday after struggling to a 5.45 ERA with a 7-7 record in 23 games with the team.

He signed a $21.05 million contract with the side in the off-season but was demoted to bullpen action last week just before being released. His final appearance for Boston came on Aug. 24 against the Yankees, where he gave up two earned runs on two hits and one walk over 2.1 innings of work.

Before joining the Red Sox in the winter, Buehler was a two-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Mayza, 33, began this season with the Pirates, pitching to a 2.89 ERA in seven appearances. However, he has been on the 60-day injured list for much of the season due to a shoulder strain and hasn’t pitched since April.

A long-time Blue Jay, Mayza was traded from Toronto to the New York Yankees last season and made appearances for the side during their run to the World Series.

The moves come after the Phillies transferred ace Zack Wheeler (shoulder) to the 60-day IL and placed fellow former Blue Jay Jordan Romano (finger) on the 15-day IL.

The Phillies are currently 79-57 and sit 6.5 games above the New York Mets for the lead in the National League East.
