The owners of the Boston Celtics have agreed to sell the team for a record sum.
The defending NBA champions will be sold by Boston Basketball Partners LLC to Symphony Technology Group managing partner Bill Chisholm for $6.1 billion, according to Shams Charania of ESPN.
Charania reports that the sale is the largest in North American sports history, surpassing the $6.05 billion sum the Washington Commanders sold for in July 2023.
Boston Basketball Partners LLC, led by members of the Grousbeck family, purchased the Celtics for $360 million from the Gaston family in 2002. The Gastons had previously owned the team since 1983.
The Grousbeck family announced last July that it was looking to sell, just weeks after the club won its 18th NBA title.
