Rachel Reeves has monstered Nigel Farage for backing Liz Truss’s disastrous mini-Budget.
The Reform UK leader described her plan for £45 billion-worth of unfunded spending cuts as “the best Conservative budget since the 1980s” after it was announced in September, 2022.
Within hours, the value of the pound had plummeted and interest rates had spiked, sending mortgage payments through the roof.
Delivering her spending review in the House of Commons today, the chancellor took aim at both the Tories and Reform’s economic record.
She said: “The Conservatives crashed our economy, they sent mortgage rates spiralling, and they put pensions in peril. I will never take those risks.
“And yet Reform, well, they’re itching to do the same thing all over again. [Nigel Farg might be playing friend of the workers now, but some of us are old enough to remember when he described that disastrous Liz Truss budget ask, and I quote, ‘the best Conservative budget since the 1980s’.
“His party has been in parliament for less than a year and yet already they have racked up £80bn of unfunded commitments. They are simply not serious.
“Every day it becomes clearer: It is Labour – and only Labour – that has a credible plan for the renewal of Britain.”
Farage could be seen laughing in his seat during the chancellor’s remarks, while his deputy, Richard Tice, tried to barrack Reeves.
