Is the Truist Championship turning into a slow-motion exit ramp, with golfers dropping out one by one and leaving fans to wonder if they should start a ‘Who’s Next?’ pool? Taking note of the current situation at the ongoing Truist Championship, that might just be the case. It started with Jason Day, who withdrew from the Truist Championship for ‘unknown reasons.’ Following him, Justin Rose, the runner-up at Augusta National who gave Rory McIlroy a major run for his career Grand Slam in the playoff, also withdrew. Now, another PGA Tour pro has pulled out of the signature event, leading to a series of concerned reactions from PGA Tour fans.
Michael Kim, who was playing the third round at the $20M Truist Championship, withdrew from the event due to a back injury. Kim, who was already dealing with back issues at the start of the Philadelphia Cricket Club event, aggravated his back problems during the first two days. Reposting the official PGA Tour X update that informed fans about his withdrawal, Michael Kim said: “Back wasn’t great to start the week and aggravated it during the last two days… will get treatment and look to get back as soon as possible.”

Perhaps nothing evidences Michael Kim’s struggle on the course more than his scores in the first three rounds before his withdrawal. In the first round, the Californian scored 72, with one double bogey and four bogeys in round 1. In the following round, Kim scored 72 again and made five bogeys. By the time he withdrew in the third round, he had a score of +7 over par.
However, this isn’t the first time Michael Kim has withdrawn due to back injuries. At the 2024 Wyndham Championship, the golfer left the event after the third round due to back injuries. Additionally, Kim had already expressed concerns about his back injury ahead of the 2024 ISCO Championship. However, his latest withdrawal has once again worried his fans.
The golf world is reacting the same way about Michael Kim’s withdrawal
Michael Kim’s recent withdrawal from the sixth PGA Tour signature event is disappointing, to say the least. After Scottie Scheffler announced he would not be in the field, fans looked forward to seeing some of the players at the Philadelphia Cricket Club, including Kim. However, Kim’s withdrawal prompted one fan to say, “Bummer. Hope you recover quickly!” Another fan of Michael Kim wished him well as he deals with the back injury: “Well that sucks. Hope you’re feeling better soon!”
Another fan brought in Kim’s and Justin Rose’s scoring stats at the Truist Championship and said, “I thought there was something off when I saw you and Rosey shooting so high.” Considering the kind of gameplay they can give, the game was worrying. Just like Kim, as seen earlier, Justin Rose also struggled at the event. Rose is dealing with an illness that caused him to score 70 in the first round and 77 in the second, pushing him to the very bottom of the leaderboard.
One fan said,“Back to being awful. It was a good run.” Kim has indeed had some worrying performances this year, but he has also shown improvement. For instance, Kim began his season as the 155th player in the OWGR. However, thanks to his three top-10 finishes this season, including one at the WM Phoenix Open, he now ranks 53rd in the OWGR.
Lastly, a fan asked, “Michael have you considered taking a couple cortisone shots and rubbing some dirt on it? You still had a shot at this thing only down 16!” Well, this one doesn’t need an explanation! But Michael Kim is set to play at Quail Hollow for the PGA Championship next week, and we hope he gets better soon!
