Joel McHale has finally confirmed a long-running Scream 7 fan theory about a crucial character. The seventh main installment in the iconic horror slasher franchise was released earlier this year.

What did Joel McHale say about Scream 7?

In a recent appearance on an Inside of You podcast episode, Joel McHale revealed Patrick Dempsey was originally supposed to reprise his role of Mark Kincaid in Scream 7. Mark wasn’t seen in subsequent Scream movies since 2000’s Scream 3.

Interestingly, a fan theory has circulated for years suggesting that Sidney Prescott married Mark, as she referred to her husband by that name in one of the sequels. According to McHale’s revelation, the role was originally intended for Dempsey, who was set to return as Sidney’s husband in Scream 7 before it fell through. McHale was ultimately cast as her husband instead.

“Patrick Dempsey played the husband in the last one, and he was supposed to play this one,” said McHale while spilling the details. “And I don’t know how it went down. I don’t know if it was schedule or money, I don’t know. Patrick, please forgive me if I’m f*****g this up.”

The actor revealed that during the filming of Scream 7, “I get there, and his nameplate is on my chair—I tried to keep it. They wouldn’t let me.”

Dempsey isn’t the only missing actor from Scream 7. Melissa Barrera, who played Samantha Carpenter in 2022’s Scream and 2023’s Scream VI, also didn’t return for this year’s installment. In her case, however, the actress was fired from the movie by Spyglass Media Group due to her political opinions she shared on social media.

Jenna Ortega was also missing from Scream 7 after initially appearing in the last two movies. But she chose to leave the film herself, as a gesture of support to Barrera. The acclaimed actress previously revealed, “The Melissa stuff was happening, and it was all kind of falling apart. If Scream 7 wasn’t going to be with that team of directors and those people I fell in love with, then it didn’t seem like the right move for me in my career at the time.”
