PlayStation Portable handheld

Rumor has it that the next-gen PlayStation handheld will be backwards compatible with the PS5 right out of the box. A known AMD insider has claimed that the portable console features shader binary compatibility, which means PS5 games should “just work.”

PlayStation handheld may still require patches for PS5 games

Leaker KeplerL2 (via Reddit) further claimed that although the handheld should run PS5 games without developer intervention, performance might not be great without a patch.

In other words, don’t expect massive AAA games to perform as well on the handheld as they do on a standard PS5 console until their developers release optimization patches. While this is expected, it does leave a big question mark over how much of the PS5’s library will work well on the portable console.

If these rumors are true, Sony first-party games will most certainly be patched for the handheld. I’m also expecting indies and other less demanding games to work out of the box. But it remains to be seen if third-party partners will be keen to patch their games or not, especially since popular games like Cyberpunk 2077 haven’t even been patched for the PS5 Pro.

As usual, take all rumors with a grain of salt until official confirmation.
