The top prospect in baseball will begin the season in the minor leagues.

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced on Saturday that shortstop Konnor Griffin has been reassigned to minor league camp.

Griffin, 19, is the No. 1 prospect in all of baseball according to MLB Pipeline, and he entered Pirates camp with a shot at making the team. He showed flashes of power during spring training games — mashing four home runs and collecting nine RBIs — but his slash line of .171/.261/.488 and .749 OPS was not good enough to crack the major league roster.

Griffin turned pro in 2025 after being selected by the Pirates with the No. 9 pick in the 2024 MLB Draft. He rose three levels in 2025 and reached as high as double-A, hitting .333/.415/.527 with a .942 OPS and 21 home runs.

The Pirates open the regular season on Thursday against the New York Mets.
