David S. Goyer recently talked about Marvel’s long-delayed Blade reboot and shared that he’s willing to return as a writer for the project. The original Blade screenwriter further opened up about his confusion over the film’s stalled development and joked that Marvel should “give [him] a call” to help move it forward.
David S. Goyer wants Marvel to call him for Mahershala Ali’s Blade movie
In an interview with ScreenRant at the world premiere of Murderbot, original Blade screenwriter David S. Goyer said he would write Marvel’s upcoming Blade movie starring Mahershala Ali. When asked what Marvel needs to do, Goyer responded, “Give me a call.”
He continued, “I would [write it]. I’ve always loved the character and I love him, and I’ve been sitting on the sideline wondering, ‘What in the world is going on? Why is it taking so long?’”
Marvel announced the Blade reboot at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, but the project has faced repeated delays, rewrites, and creative changes. Goyer noted, “I’m a huge Marvel fan myself, and I’ve just been totally puzzled.” The film has seen several writers and directors come and go. One version reportedly set the story in the 1920s, and Marvel cast supporting actors who later exited the project.
Marvel originally brought on Stacy Osei-Kuffour to write the script and announced Bassam Tariq as director, but both aren’t involved anymore. The writers currently credited are Michael Starrbury, Nic Pizzolatto, Michael Green, and Eric Pearson. Mahershala Ali remains in the lead role as Blade, with Mia Goth to co-star as Lilith. Marvel has not confirmed a production schedule or release date for the film.
Despite several MCU references to Blade, Mahershala Ali has yet to debut in live action. Meanwhile, more complex Marvel projects like Spider-Man: No Way Home, Eternals, and Deadpool & Wolverine progressed through development with fewer public delays than Blade.
Goyer previously wrote all three films in the original Blade trilogy: Blade (1998), Blade II (2002), and Blade: Trinity (2004). As of May 2025, Marvel has not issued a new update on the status of the Blade reboot.
