In any form of storytelling, even in any genre, worldbuilding is of paramount importance. Good worldbuilding is instrumental in immersing an audience in the midst of the narrative, not only in the physical nature and geography of the setting, but in the story’s cultural and societal design and ingrained history. The Lord of the Rings is one of cinema’s finest ever examples of it, with the movies using every element at their disposal to construct a world of hypnotic wonder and fantasy awe through narrative tone. The use of architecture, nature, and character design as expansions of the different races and the exceptional production make every room, costume, and prop feel authentic. Of course, the Peter Jackson trilogy also had the extensive Middle-earth lore to lean on as well, with regard to J. R. R. Tolkien’s in-built history and mythology, as well as the linguistic and cultural foundations of each realm and race.
